NJ State Scholarships
Governors Urban Scholarship
Candidates are selected for consideration by their high school based upon standard academic criteria in the fall of their senior year in high school. Award recipients are notified of their potential eligibility in December of their senior year in high school. Interested students should contact their high school guidance counselor for more information. Students must reside in one of the following communities at the time of high school nomination:
- Asbury Park
- Camden City
- East Orange City
- Irvington Township
- Jersey City
- Lakewood
- Millville City
- Newark City
- New Brunswick
- Paterson City
- Plainfield
- Roselle Borough
- Trenton City
- Vineland City
Enrollment Requirements - To receive this award, students must enroll full time in an approved degree or certificate program at an eligible New Jersey college or university.
NJ STARS II
Scholarships for up to four semesters are available to NJ STARS students who graduated from a New Jersey county college with an associate’s degree and transfer to a New Jersey four-year public or private institution. Students must be enrolled full-time and maintain at least a 3.25 GPA each semester to maintain eligibility.
- New NJ STARS II students are eligible to receive awards up to $1,250 per semester.
- A valid/current FAFSA and final official grade transcript must be on file before NJ STARS II can be awarded.
- Transfer students new to Kean must self-identify as an NJ STARS II student on the Admissions application AND call the NJ STARS II Coordinator in the Kean Office of Financial Aid at 908-737-3194 or email wetzela@kean.edu.
- NOTE: Students who began NJ STARS II program participation prior to Fall 2012 will no longer be "grandfathered in" to receive the higher NJ STARS II awards (subject to change based on the annual state appropriations act).
The New Jersey Higher Education Assistance Authority (HESAA) has implemented an email address (NJSTARS@hesaa.org) and telephone numbers (800-792-8670 or 609-588-3594), specifically for NJ STARS and NJ STARS II.
New Jersey Foster Care (NJFC) Scholars
Current high school seniors who are/were in foster care, were adopted, or have entered Kinship Legal Guardianship through the NJ Division of Child Protection & Permanency (formerly DYFS) may also apply for a variety of competitive private scholarships funded and administered by Foster and Adoptive Family Services (FAFS).
Eligible students may receive NJFC scholarships during the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms for: tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation, and other education-related expenses. Maximum NJFC awards are $2,500 per semester.
