Research and Innovation Faculty-Student Seed Grant
Program Description
Research and Innovation faculty-student seed grants will help students develop vision and strategic planning skills to address current and forthcoming global challenges. The STEM initiative is now appropriately complemented with the arts (called as STEAM) to effectively develop an engaging perspective in design and also understanding the socio-economic impact. The R&I grant will support interdisciplinary research and will be open to students from all majors encouraging them to network and learn skills to understand diversity and teamwork through peer interactions. This grant will allow students to advance their research concept.
Eligibility
- All full-time faculty (or "appointment") at one of the Kean USA campuses are eligible to apply
- Faculty who have received two consecutive R&I awards must wait a year before applying again
- All students currently enrolled as undergraduate or masters-level graduate students and who will be enrolled at Kean during the fall semester following the award
- The Research and Innovation faculty-student seed grant projects should be different from research done in fulfillment of a requirement in the student’s academic program and cannot be used to earn academic credit
- Each application needs to include a student and a faculty member
Selection Criteria
- Proposals that articulate a clear and strong plan for work that will seed follow-on funding from an external source will be given priority. Preference may be given to proposals involving interdisciplinary research. Proposals must include a specific plan for work and a specific plan for obtaining external funding.
- It is expected that a proposal for external support will be submitted within twelve (12) months of completion of the Research Seed Grant, evidence of the potential of which must be described in the proposal.
- If applying second year in a row, it must align with the original award
Funding Awards

Applicants may request awards up to $5,000 for collaborative (interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary) proposals. Proposals must clearly indicate in their application materials how their collaborative work benefits the anticipated outcomes.

All requests must be specific, i.e., funds for a specific research or scholarly project, or creative work.

All requests must come in the form of a completed application using appropriate forms and submitted by the deadline.

The awards are at the discretion of university funding availability, but we anticipate funding 5 teams in the upcoming academic year.
