Project Adelante

Project Adelante is an innovative pre-college program, designed to reduce the high school dropout rate among Latino students.

The program provides immersive experiences and instructional activities designed to help students increase their academic skills and encourage youths to pursue higher education.

About

As part of the program, high school students attend Kean University every weekday during a four-week summer session and Saturdays during the fall and spring semesters for an academic enrichment program. The project's success is based on the following components that studies have shown to be key in the retention of Hispanic students:

  • parent and family involvement; 
  • the use of the language and culture of the students for instruction;
  • a high level of cooperation with the school districts; and
  • the availability of role models.

Project Adelante, an alliance between Kean and the Passaic, Perth Amboy and Plainfield school districts, was developed in 1988 when it started its activities with 83 students from the Perth Amboy School District.
