Q: Who can join the ESL program at Kean University?
A: The ESL program at Kean University serves non-native speakers of English who have been admitted to the University, but who need additional development in English in order to successfully complete a 4-year degree.
(Please note: We do not have a separate ESL program for non-matriculated students)
Q: Do ESL courses count for college credit?
A: Some ESL courses are developmental credits that do not count towards graduation. The courses ENG 1300 and ENG 1430 do count for college credit.
Q: Do ESL courses affect my GPA?
A: Most English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are pass/fail and do not factor into your Grade Point Average (GPA). The course ENG 1430 does affect your GPA.
Q: I took ESL in high school. Do I have to take ESL at Kean?
A: Your score from the ESL Placement Test will determine whether you need to take ESL at Kean.
Q: Can I take other courses while taking ESL courses?
A: Yes, you may take other courses while taking ESL courses but your Advisor will determine what those courses will be.
Q: May I study part-time?
A: Yes, you can take less than 12 credits and be considered a part-time student. If you are a part of Supera, EOF or any other program that requires you to be full time, however, reach out to them directly and ask.
Q: Can I take classes in the evening?
A: Yes, the ESL Program has courses from Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM -10:15 PM.
Q: Is there an opportunity for me to get extra help?
A: Yes, tutoring is available through the ESL Program or the Nancy Thompson Library.
Q: Can I get a student visa?

Q: Are there any programs for spanish speaking students?
A: Kean has a program specially designed for Spanish speakers. SUPERA Spanish Speaking Program, established in 1972, offers Hispanic students who are English Language Learners access to higher education. Through SUPERA, students follow a structured study program designed to achieve full integration into university life. This includes taking courses in Spanish during their first years of study.
