ESL 0090 Beginning English as a Second Language (6 credits)
For non-native speakers, beginning-level study of English for use in academic settings, including work in written and oral language. Graded on a Pass/Fail basis only. Required of ESL students according to results of placement test. Prerequisite(s): Placement by advisement only.
ESL 0093 Beginning Conversation in English (3 credits)
Introduction to and practice in basic conversational English in academic, community, social, and work situations. Pass/fail. Institutional credit only.
ESL 0095 Beginning Reading and Writing in English (3)
Introduction to basic reading content and sentence structure through interaction with introductory reading passages. Write short paragraphs in response to readings with an emphasis on learner's own experiences. Reading and writing emphasis. Pass/Fail.
ESL 0100 English as a Second Language I (6)
Narrative and expository writing. Part one of a two-part sequence that prepares students for courses in academic written and oral communication. Focus on topics of interest to the students. Graded on a Pass/Fail basis only. Required of all ESL students according to results of placement test. Prerequisite(s): Placement by advisement only.
ESL 0103 Conversation I (3)
Practice in developing listening skills as they are used in the classroom and in a variety of social and work situations. Prerequisite(s): Placement by advisement only. Limited to students who are not native speakers of English.
ESL 0105 Reading and Writing in English I (3)
Develop as a reader and writer of English. Reading emphasis is placed on exposure to various adapted and unadapted texts with high interest topics common to college level courses. Attention is also given to the development of writing skills in response to readings and to the expansion of academic vocabulary. Reading and writing emphasis. Pass/Fail. Prerequisite is placement by advisement only.

ESL 0205 Reading and Writing in English II (3)
Continue to develop as a reader and writer of English. Reading focus is placed on various adapted and unadapated texts with high interest topics common to college level courses. Attention is also given to the further development of writing skills in response to readings and to the further expansion of academic vocabulary. Reading and writing emphasis. Pass/fail.
ESL 0303 Academic Oral Discourse I (3)
Designed to develop fluency in the spoken language and to enlarge student's English vocabulary. Prerequisite(s): Consent of program director.
ESL 0305 Academic Written Discourse I (3)
Limited to students who are non native speakers of English. Advance skills and strategies for more effective reading, writing, critical thinking, and vocabulary development in the English language. The class will concentrate on the reading of academic subject matter of high interest to the learner. Focus on further enhancing reading in the English language for General Education courses. Reading and writing emphasis. Pass/Fail. Prerequisite(s): Placement by advisement only.
ESL 0403 Academic Oral Discourse II (3)
Develop oral language in academic settings, using authentic materials related to students' chosen disciplines. Pass/Fail. Institutional credit only. Prerequisite(s): Placement by advisement only.
ESL 0405 Academic Written Discourse II (3)
Develop rhetorical strategies in English as well as skills for more effective reading, writing, critical thinking, and vocabulary development, as applied to the student's chosen major. Reading and writing emphasis. Pass/Fail. Prerequisite(s): Placement by advisement only. Limited to students who are non native speakers of English.
ENG 1300 College Composition for Non-Native Students I (6)
Part one of a two-part sequence emphasizing reading, writing processes, and critical thinking across the curriculum. Equivalent to the ENG 1025. Graded on a Pass/Fail basis only. Required of all ESL students according to results of placement test. Writing emphasis.
ENG 1430 College Composition for Non-Native Students II (6)
Practice academic expository and persuasive genres. Emphasis on reading, writing process, collaboration, and critical thinking across the curriculum. Equivalent to ENG 1030. General Education Foundation Course. Writing Emphasis. 5 hours per week class time. Pre-requisite: Placement by advisement only.
"L" Sections
Sections designated as “L” sections within the English Department, Communications Department and General Education are taught by ESL specialists. These courses include COMM 1402, ENG 2403, GE 2026, and ENG 3090. Credits earned for these courses fulfill degree requirements.
COMM 1402 L Speech Communication as Critical Citizenship (3 credits)
Understanding and practicing speech communication as a central value of a civil society. It is this value that proves the frame for producing, presenting, interpreting and evaluating oral messages in dyadic, small group, and public specking contexts. General Education requirement.
ENG 2403 L World Literature (3)
Readings in world literature from ancient times to present. Emphasis on cultural diversity, selected themes, and literary genres. Development of aesthetic and ethical values and of critical reading, thinking, and writing. Prerequisite(s): ENG 1030 or ENG 1430 (or equivalent) and completion of any freshman placement requirements in reading. Credit not granted for both ENG 2403 and ENG 2603.
GE 2026 L Research and Technology (3)
Introduction to the research process for students with Undecided Majors in the College of Liberal Arts; preparation of a formal research paper and an oral presentation with an emphasis on use of library resources and multi-disciplinary approaches to design, investigate, and report research activities. Prerequisite(s): ENG 1030 or ENG 1430, or equivalents, and COMM 1402.
ENG 3090 L Business and Professional Writing (3)
Readings, discussion, and writing projects focused on writing for the workplace, including completion of a resume and a formal report. Emphasis placed on rhetorical conventions, style, design, and formatting. Prerequisite(s): ENG 1030 or ENG 1430, and ENG 2403 or equivalents. Co-requisite(s): ENG 2403 and GE 202X
