ESL 0090 Beginning English as a Second Language (6 credits)

ESL 0093 Beginning Conversation in English (3 credits)
Extensive practice in conversational English in academic and informal settings. Attention given to strategies to improve comprehension and speech at a beginner level. Pass/Fail. Prerequisite is placement by advisement only. Co-requisite: ESL 0090, ESL 0095
ESL 0095 Beginning Reading and Writing in English (3 credits)
Introduction to basic reading content, comprehension strategies and vocabulary through interaction with introductory reading passages. Write short paragraphs in response to readings with an emphasis on the learner's own experiences. Reading and writing emphasis. Pass/Fail. Prerequisite: Placement by advisement only. Co-requisite: ESL 0090.
ESL 0100 English as a Second Language I (6 credits)
Part one of a two-part sequence that prepares students to do academic writing in their course work. Focus on topics of interest to the students. Graded on a Pass/Fail basis only. Required for ESL students according to placement test results. Writing emphasis. Prerequisite: ESL 0090 or placement by advisement. Co-requisites: ESL 0105 and ESL 0103.
ESL 0103 Conversation I (3 credits)
Extensive practice in conversational English in academic and informal settings. Attention given to strategies to improve comprehension and speech at a high beginner level. Pass/Fail. Prerequisite: ESL 0093 or placement by advisement. Co-requisite: ESL 0100, ESL 0105
ESL 0105 Reading and Writing in English I (3 credits)
Develop as a reader and writer of English. Reading emphasis placed on exposure to various adapted and unadapted texts with high interest topics common to college level courses. Attention given to the development of writing skills in response to readings and to the expansion of general and academic vocabulary. Reading and writing emphasis. Pass/Fail. Prerequisite is ESL 0095 or placement by advisement. Co-requisite: ESL 0100.
ESL 0200 English as a Second Language II (6 credits)
Part two of a two-part sequence that prepares students to do academic writing in their course work. Focus on topics of interest to the students. Graded on a Pass/Fail basis only. Required for ESL students according to placement test results. Writing emphasis. Prerequisite: ESL 0100 or placement by advisement. Co-requisite: ESL 0205
ESL 0203 Conversation II (3 credits)
Extensive practice in conversational English in academic and informal settings. Attention given to strategies to improve comprehension and speech at a lower intermediate level. Pass/Fail. Prerequisite: ESL 0103 or placement by advisement.
ESL 0205 Reading and Writing in English II (3 credits)
Continue to develop as a reader and writer of English. Reading focus placed on various adapted and unadapted texts with high interest topics common to college level courses. Writing focus on responding to readings and expanding academic vocabulary. Reading and writing emphasis. Pass/Fail. Prerequisite: ESL 0105 or by placement. Co-requisite: ESL 0200.
ESL 0303 Academic Oral Discourse I (3 credits)
Develop oral language and listening skills at an intermediate level using materials across academic disciplines. Pass/Fail. Prerequisite: ESL 0203 or placement by advisement.
ESL 0305 Academic Written Discourse I (3 credits)
Advance skills and strategies for more effective reading, writing, critical thinking, and vocabulary development in the English language. Readings focused on academic subject matter of high interest to the learner and on vocabulary for General Education courses. Reading and writing emphasis. Pass/Fail. Prerequisite: ESL 0205 or by placement. Co-requisite: ENG 1300.
ESL 0403 Academic Oral Discourse II (3 credits)
Develop oral language and listening skills in academic settings at a high intermediate level, using materials related to students’ chosen fields. Pass/Fail. Prerequisite is ESL 0303 or placement by advisement.
ESL 0405 Academic Written Discourse II (3 credits)
Develop rhetorical strategies in English as well as skills for more effective reading, writing, critical thinking, and vocabulary development, as applied to the student’s chosen major. Reading and writing emphasis. Pass/Fail. Prerequisite: ESL 0305 or placement by advisement. Co-requisite: ENG 1430.
ENG 1300 College Composition for Non-Native Students I (6 credits)
Part one of a two-part sequence emphasizing writing, reading and critical thinking across the curriculum. Graded on a Pass/Fail basis only. Offered only to ESL students according to results of placement test or completion of prerequisites. Writing emphasis. Prerequisite: ESL 0200 or placement by advisement. Co-requisite: ESL 0305
ENG 1430 College Composition for Non-Native Students II (6 credits)
Development of reading, writing processes, and critical thinking across the curriculum, particularly expository and persuasive genres. Equivalent to ENG 1030. General Education foundation requirement. Writing emphasis. Prerequisite: ENG 1300 or by placement. Co-requisite: ESL 0405
"L" Sections
Sections designated as “L” sections within the English Department, Communications Department and General Education are taught by ESL specialists. These courses include COMM 1402, ENG 2403, GE 2026, and ENG 3090. Credits earned for these courses fulfill degree requirements.
COMM 1402 L Speech Communication as Critical Citizenship (3 credits)
Understanding and practicing speech communication as a central value of a civil society. It is this value that proves the frame for producing, presenting, interpreting and evaluating oral messages in dyadic, small group, and public specking contexts. General Education requirement.
ENG 2403 L World Literature (3)
Readings in world literature from ancient times to present. Emphasis on cultural diversity, selected themes, and literary genres. Development of aesthetic and ethical values and of critical reading, thinking, and writing. Prerequisite(s): ENG 1030 or ENG 1430 (or equivalent) and completion of any freshman placement requirements in reading. Credit not granted for both ENG 2403 and ENG 2603.
GE 2026 L Research and Technology (3)
Introduction to the research process for students with Undecided Majors in the College of Liberal Arts; preparation of a formal research paper and an oral presentation with an emphasis on use of library resources and multi-disciplinary approaches to design, investigate, and report research activities. Prerequisite(s): ENG 1030 or ENG 1430, or equivalents, and COMM 1402.
ENG 3090 L Business and Professional Writing (3)
Readings, discussion, and writing projects focused on writing for the workplace, including completion of a resume and a formal report. Emphasis placed on rhetorical conventions, style, design, and formatting. Prerequisite(s): ENG 1030 or ENG 1430, and ENG 2403 or equivalents. Co-requisite(s): ENG 2403 and GE 202X
