Nurse Faculty Loan Program 2022 - 2023
What is the NFLP?
The Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) is a federally funded loan program administered by the Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA). The purpose of this funding is to increase the number of qualified nursing faculty by offering loans to students enrolled in graduate nursing degree programs who are committed to become nurse faculty. In exchange for full-time post-graduation employment as nurse faculty, the program authorizes forgiveness of up to 85 percent of the NFLP loan. Faculty positions may be in any state and at any accredited nursing program (ADN, BSN, MSN, DNP, or PhD). Employment as nurse faculty at a full-time capacity may include one of the following:
(1) employment as a full-time faculty member at an accredited school of nursing;
(2) employment as a part-time faculty member at an accredited school of nursing in
combination with another part-time faculty position or part-time clinical preceptor/educator position affiliated with an accredited school of nursing that together equates to full-time employment; or
(3) designation of nurse faculty in a joint nurse faculty appointment serving as full-time preceptor for an accredited school of nursing, within an academic-practice partnership framework. The loan is renewable annually; therefore, students must apply each academic year to receive the NFLP loan. Awards are made by the Financial Aid Office in consultation with the School of Nursing and are offered to eligible students on a first come, first served basis; renewal of the award in subsequent academic years is made on a funds available basis and is conditional upon the recipient having maintained a satisfactory academic progress (i.e. having earned a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 for all coursework completed at Kean University).
What expenses does the NFLP cover?
The NFLP is not a need-based program, but a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) must be completed each year that funds are requested to document citizenship and lack of any liens or default on federal student debt. NFLP covers the cost of tuition and fees. Awards may be renewable for a maximum of five years but this is contingent upon ongoing federal funding. The NFLP loan may not exceed $25,000 per student for any academic year. The NFLP student borrower must complete the specified education component(s) for the advanced nursing degree program prior to graduating from the program.
- Who is eligible to apply to the NFLP?
Full-time or part-time graduate students who plan careers as nurse faculty are eligible to apply and may be eligible for up to 5 years of financial support (contingent upon ongoing federal funding and therefore subject to change). NLFP loans are made on a first-come-first-serve basis for each academic year until funds are expended. Priority will be given to full-time students and students who already have received NFLP support and those who do not have funding from other sources.
Eligibility requirements for new and continuing applicants:
- Be enrolled in the MSN program and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Be at least part-time (3-6 credits/semester) student status in the MSN program.
- Complete all requirements of the MSN program within five years of initial funding
- Maintain enrollment for a minimum of two consecutive semesters (either full-time or part-time) during an academic year while receiving the NFLP loan support. Students enrolled in the MSN program's last year are not required to enroll for two terms/semesters if program requirements are met.
- Follow application procedures for each academic year that the student desires to be funded.
- Be a citizen or national of the U.S. or a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. and its territories.
- Have no judgment liens entered against him/her based on the default on federal debt.

- Sign a promissory note and a statement of rights and responsibilities.
- Complete the required nursing education coursework. MSN students are required to take 32-38 credits
- MSN – Nursing Leadership 32 credits
