Faculty Housing Guidelines

Faculty Housing Overview

Kean maintains a limited number of University-owned apartments on campus for faculty members and administrators. Eligibility is limited to newly-recruited faculty/administrators joining Kean from outside of New Jersey. To help facilitate their transition to the University, Kean offers newly-hired faculty members short-term apartment rentals while they seek permanent housing in New Jersey. Placement in faculty housing is temporary and based on availability.  Apartments are one or two bedroom units and conveniently located on the Union campus. Special requests for housing by existing faculty and staff will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.  

Waitlist Rules

• You must be a newly-hired faculty member or administrator transitioning to New Jersey from outside the tri-state area.
• Apartments will be offered as they become available.  If you do not accept the apartment offered when your name is reached, your name will be removed from the waitlist and will not be considered for future vacancies.
• Waitlists expire on June 30th of each year.  Once the waitlist has expired, your name will be removed and you will not be considered for future vacancies.

Animals/Pets

Animals and/or pets are prohibited on the premises unless you receive a special waiver.  Residents understand that the prohibition of pets also applies to pets of residents’ guests and visitors.

Subletting

Subletting of rental units is prohibited and any such assignment, subletting, or license shall automatically void and terminate the lease agreement.

School Pick-up and Drop-off

Residents should refer to the Hillside Board of Education or Union Board of Education regarding school pick-up and drop-off locations.

Installing Equipment

Residents must visit https://login.myschoolbuilding.com/msb?acctNum=563152532&productID=MD to enter a work request to have any wall mounts installed in their units.  Wall mounts must be provided by residents.

Painting Units

Residents are not allowed to paint their rental units. All maintenance will be done at the discretion of Kean University.

Transfer to Another Unit

Residents will not be given an option to transfer to another rental unit during their lease period.

No Smoking

Smoking is prohibited anywhere in the unit and in any of the interior common areas of East Campus Housing and Thomas Court Housing.

Floor covering

Second-floor and third-floor residents are responsible for providing floor coverings that cover 70 percent of all surface flooring.
