Department of Communication, Media and Journalism
About
Kean University students acquire broad knowledge, professional experience and a solid foundation for career success in the exciting fields of media and communication at the university's Department of Communication, Media and Journalism (CMJ).
It's a fact: today’s media landscape is vibrant, diverse and rapidly expanding. At Kean, we train our students in media ethics and theory, while also preparing them to produce content and tell stories in various forms of media.
While studying at CMJ, communication students can acquire practical expertise by working on the University’s award-winning student newspaper, The Tower. Students can also join the Kean chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), write and produce on-air segment for Kean TV, or work on the campus radio station WKNJ-FM. The Annual Speech Contest is also open to all students as well.
Though not required, in addition to all of the extracurricular activities available to them, communication students are also strongly encouraged to acquire at least one (1) internship opportunity prior to graduating. The Department of Communication, Media and Journalism is among the leading internship producers within the College of Liberal Arts (as well as the university) and offers a wide range of resources to help its students find the opportunities that are right for them.
In addition to its major areas of study, CMJ also offers a minor in Communication and a minor in Social Media. Additional minor areas of study are pending.
Students with a 3.3 G.P.A. (or higher) are invited to become members of Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honor society, and/or AERho, the national broadcasting honor society. These achievements are celebrated yearly with an induction ceremony each Spring.
