Sarah Mack Recognized by the Goldwater Scholarship Competition

Kean Junior Sarah Mack recently received an honorable mention in the 2017 Goldwater Scholarship competition. This year, 1286 students from 470 institutions were nominated for Goldwater scholarships. 307 Honorable Mentions were awarded.

Mack has worked with local communities in Cambodia, Guatemala, China, and the Bahamas, studying the intersection between public health and the environment. She is a Life Sciences major and is passionate about uniting science with social responsibility.

“My biggest goal is to grow leaders who will be just as passionate as I am for the environment,” said Mack. 

In 2015, Sarah spent three months in Cambodia teaching English. Drawn to Cambodia initially by the issue of human trafficking, Mack chose to work with the non-profit organization Heart of Hope at a small school located within a predominantly Vietnamese community.

The Goldwater Scholarship was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to Senator Barry Goldwater. Today, Goldwater scholars can be found conducting research in medicine and defense, and teaching future generations of scientists, mathematicians and engineers.

Sarah plans to continue her studies and pursue a Ph.D. in Environmental Science. She hopes to one day conduct research on environmental issues in underdeveloped countries.
