Kean University Signs Joint Admissions Agreement with Union County College

UNION, N.J. – Kean University now has a Joint Admissions Agreement with Union County College, less than a month after Kean finalized a similar agreement with Middlesex County College. The new agreement gives Union County College graduates who meet Kean’s academic standards automatic admission to the University. It was signed by Kean President Dawood Farahi, Ph.D., and Union President Margaret M. McMenamin, Ed.D., on the college’s Cranford campus on Wednesday, October 18.

“This is a great partnership,” said Farahi. “We can make sure that Union County College graduates benefit from everything we have at Kean. We have amazing programs, and this new agreement provides a very smooth transition from Union to Kean.”

The agreement outlines articulation agreements, or curriculum maps, in a variety of programs to ensure that credits taken at Union County College will transfer seamlessly to Kean and be counted toward a bachelor’s degree. Articulation agreements have been finalized for the following academic programs:

  • B.S. Chemistry-American Chemical Society
  • B.A. Criminal Justice
  • B.A. Early Childhood P-3
  • B.A. Elementary Education K-6
  • B.A. Elementary Education K-6 and 5-8
  • B.A. History
  • B.A. Theatre

Additional articulation agreements are expected in the coming weeks for the following programs:

    • B.A. Mathematical Science-General Option
    • B.S. Computer Science
    • B.S. Information Technology
    • B.S. Computer Science-Information System Option
    • B.A. Chemistry
    • B.A. Biology-General Option
  • BID Industrial Design
  • BFA Interior Design
  • BFA Graphic Design-Interactive Print Screen
  • BFA Graphic Design-Interactive Advertising

“Our goal is that every single program possible will be linked, so students can come to Union County College, know that they are taking the right classes and be admitted simultaneously to Kean University as juniors,” said McMenamin. “The cost of a college education is a national discussion. Now, students can stay in Union County, get a world-class education at Union County College and Kean University and pay less than $40,000 for four years of college. We are making a difference for every student and every resident in this county.”

Union County College sends more graduates to Kean University than any other community college. Eighteen percent of Kean’s transfer students started their education at Union. Two pillars of higher education in Union County and the state, Union and Kean have a long history of cooperation, and the Joint Admissions Agreement reaffirms their strong partnership.

Kean University was named to the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Transfer Honor Roll for the past two years. Kean is one of only 65 colleges and universities in the nation to receive the distinction. The PTK Transfer Honor Roll recognizes four-year colleges and universities for their institutional partnerships and collaboration with community colleges; support for transfer students; and transfer innovations.

Kean is at the forefront of community college partnership and innovation in New Jersey. Kean Ocean, the University’s unique partnership with Ocean County College where students can earn a Kean bachelor’s degree on the college’s Toms River campus, celebrated its 10th anniversary last year. Kean also has Joint Admissions Agreements with Hudson County Community College, Passaic County Community College, Sussex County College and Raritan Valley Community College. Additional agreements are being developed with Essex County College and County College of Morris.
