Kean Provost Recognized for Contributions to The New York Times

Kean University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jeffrey H. Toney, Ph.D., was among 50 all-star contributors from around the world recently recognized as “regular” contributors to The New York Times.

Toney, who has been published 38 times in the paper, was invited to the Times to get an inside look at the letters department, and meet Times' columnists and members of the op-ed and editorial staffs.

Other invited contributors were David Evans, Ph.D., senior admissions officer at Harvard College, and Bruce Weinstein, Ph.D., a Forbes’ contributor and chief executive officer of the Institute for High Character Leadership.

Each day, the Times receives about 1,000 submissions for letters and another 1,000 for op-eds.

“I have shared with my students that persistence and engagement pays off when submitting articles for mass news media,” Toney said. “I estimate that I have submitted more than 400 pieces to achieve this record with the Times.”

At the event, Letters’ Editor Tom Feyer acknowledged Toney’s recent contribution, published on Wednesday, May 2, on How College Students Can Learn to Write Well, in which he offers advice on how students can write the perfect essay.

In addition to being an educator and a scientist, Toney is a writer of flash fiction and was nominated twice for a Pushcart Prize in literary fiction.
