Kean to Host Hundreds of Union Township Students Following School Closure
The Kean University Board of Trustees today approved a plan that will bring hundreds of Union Township elementary students to Kean’s Union campus for the rest of the academic year while their school building is closed due to mold.
The displaced students, representing more than 30 classrooms from Hannah Caldwell Elementary School, will temporarily attend school on the fourth floor and a portion of the third floor of Kean’s 1085 Morris Avenue facility.
Kean University, which recently acquired the building, is providing the space at no cost to Union Township Public Schools. As part of the agreement, Kean’s College of Education will collaborate with the district to create experiential learning opportunities for Kean students.
“As an anchor institution, Kean is pleased to support the Union Township community in its time of need,” said Kean University President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D. “This partnership allows us to provide these young learners a safe and supportive environment. We are proud to help ensure their education continues uninterrupted while strengthening the bonds between our University and the community we serve.”
Board of Trustees Chair Steve Fastook 'H06 said the initiative demonstrates the University’s dedication to partnering with surrounding communities to advance the public good.
“This agreement underscores Kean’s dedication to being a strong and reliable partner to the community,” Fastook said. “We are happy to step up and support Union Township Public Schools during this challenging time, reinforcing our role as a trusted neighbor and community anchor.”
Acting Dean of the College of Education Sancha Gray, Ed.D., highlighted the educational benefits of the collaboration for Kean students.
“This partnership provides an opportunity for Kean’s College of Education students to engage in hands-on learning experiences,” Gray said. “By working directly with Union Township Public Schools, our future educators will gain valuable insights and practical skills that will shape their careers.”
The Hannah Caldwell Elementary students are expected to begin classes at Kean’s facility on Monday, November 18, and remain there through the end of the 2024-2025 academic year.
Union Township Public Schools and Kean are working collaboratively to ensure a smooth transition for students and their families. A parent night is scheduled for Sunday, November 17.
