China in the World Conference at Kean University Explores China’s Influence on the World of Fashion

Union, N.J. - Kean University will hold its second annual China in the World conference on Wednesday, March 29 at 3:00 p.m. in the STEM atrium. The conference will highlight China’s influence on the world of fashion and culminate in a live fashion show. Noted fashion scholar Valerie Steele, the director and chief curator of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, will lead a panel discussion on Chinese fashion at the event, along with fashion designer Ruiping Guo.
“Kean, which operates a full scale additional campus in Wenzhou, China, prides itself on contributing to the cultural exchange between east and west. We are excited to host China in the World for the second consecutive year and facilitate a discussion of China’s role in the global economy,” said Kean University President Dawood Farahi, Ph.D.
Since 1997, Valerie Steele has organized more than 25 exhibitions for The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology including: The Corset, London Fashion, Gothic: Dark Glamour; Daphne Guinness; A Queer History of Fashion; Dance and Fashion; and Proust’s Muse, the Countess Greffulhe. As an author, curator, editor and public intellectual, Steele has been instrumental in creating the modern field of fashion studies and in raising awareness of the cultural significance of fashion.
Ruiping Guo is a professor at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology. She is also Director of the China Knitting Fashion R&D Center and serves on the China Wool Textile Industry Association Council, the expert committee of the Chinese Knitting Industry Association and the academic committee of China Fashion Association. In 2014, Ruping participated in the APEC clothing design week and won the outstanding contribution award. Her work has also been featured during Shanghai Fashion Week.
