Transformational Learning Update (Kean Online)
- The Degree Completion initiative launched in Spring 2024, bringing in adult students with some college and no degree to complete their educational journey here at Kean. The first cohort had a successful experience in their first semester, with over 30 students returning to college at Kean and one graduate in May of 2024.
- Transformational Learning has partnered with Supera to offer the first Supera Spanish Language Program course fully online to begin expanding the impact of the program and serve new students. This new course modality launched in Fall 2023, with plans to add more courses to their online offerings.
- We are building the Certificate in Workforce Readiness to be offered to families of incoming Kean students and others in Entrepreneurial Education Initiatives (EEI) programs through the Generation2Generation grant.
- We’ve launched Territorium, a tool for students to track microcredentials and other learning experiences aligned to learning outcomes, skills, and job opportunities to serve as a verifiable record of learning beyond their transcript. We worked with Student Affairs on their Cougar Climb first year program as the first to use the platform, with more to come.
Hold Reform Status Update
- We successfully reduced registration restriction hold type by 67%, decreasing from 103 hold types to just 34. Many of the holds eliminated were financial in nature; a nearly unprecedented move. This significant reduction demonstrates our commitment to simplifying administrative processes and enhancing student access to necessary courses. Notably, in Spring 2023, 53% of students with a financial balance over $1,500 persisted one year later, compared to only 39% in the baseline year before financial holds were eliminated.
- The disparity in average registration hold resolution time between Pell eligible and non-Pell eligible students was reduced by 79.64% from Fall 2022 to Spring 2024. Additionally, the average resolution time disparity by race and ethnicity decreased by 84.04% during the same period. These improvements highlight our focus on equity and ensuring all students receive timely support.
35% growth
From Fall 2022 to Fall 2024, we achieved a 35.56% growth in early course registration.
Teaching and Learning Status Update Information
As Moon Shot for Equity continues to drive reform that leads to student success, this spring the Teaching and Learning practice team came together to focus on how courses can be better designed to foster students belonging and inclusive and equitable practices. The focus area for these efforts are centered on the reimagining of the General Education (GE) program at Kean, an effort that has been in development for 2 years and is now being fully piloted this Fall 2024.
Updates from the Team:
The 2024 - 2025 GE Fellows and Pilot Faculty initiative aims to support innovative teaching within a new GE curriculum by utilizing a learning communities approach. By working collaboratively with the GE Task Force, these two fellowships are designed to build a culture of innovative and collaborative teaching and learning in the General Education Program. Theme-based Learning Communities are central to this project, utilizing three themes that are relevant to our campus community, of interest to our first-year students, and in alignment with the GE Program’s Student Learning Outcomes. The pilot will be offered to first-year students and include courses offered in our current General Education curriculum, both GE Foundation and GE Distribution courses.
Advising Update Information
During the 2023-24 academic year, the first recommendation from the report generated by the President's Task Force on Advising was implemented. For the first time, all incoming first year students met 1:1 with a professional advisor before registering for classes. As outlined in the report and associated recommendations, the Center for Advising, Persistence, and Success, or CAPS, led this effort. Specialized programs including Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF), Supera, Bridge to Success, and the Center for Veteran Student Success, advised their incoming students and supported CAPS' efforts as well. All staff providing professional advising received common training.
Next Steps from the Team:
The next step toward implementation of the Task Force's recommendations is to work with Academic Affairs to (1) clearly define the role and responsibilities for faculty advisors in light of the changes to professional advising and Kean's evolution to a research university, and (2) to create synergistic systems to provide coordinated advising from both faculty and professional advisors for a seamless student experience.
