General Education MATH
The School of General Studies delivers six first year level math classes. The General Education (GE) student learning objective in Quantitative Literacy states: The student will demonstrate the ability to utilize numerical data accurately and effectively to address real world problems. Toward that end, GE Math courses require each student to participate in 10 hours of supplemental learning throughout the semester. Supplemental learning (SL) is led by full time faculty, adjuncts (ATEAM), graduate assistants, and undergraduate GEM tutors. SL covers key course topics throughout the semester through a small group format that engages students in working together toward deeper learning of the course material.
Math 0901 - Basic Algebra; a non-college credit bearing 3 credit hour course for students that do not place into college level math based on their placement test score. Topics include: Operations with Real Numbers, Simplifying Algebraic Expressions, Linear Equations, Graphing Equations of Lines, Applications and Word Problems, Operations with Polynomials, Factoring Polynomials, Solving Quadratic Equations, Operations with Square Roots. Semester Hours: Non-credit.

Math 0902 - Basic Algebra; a non-college credit bearing 1 credit hour course for students that do not major in math, science or education and do not require Math 1000, 1044 or 1054, Topics include: Operations with Real Numbers, Simplifying Algebraic Expressions, Linear Equations, Graphing Equations of Lines, Applications and Word Problems, Operations with Polynomials, Factoring Polynomials, Solving Quadratic Equations, Operations with Square Roots. Semester Hours: Non-credit. This is a fall course and it is paired with Math 1016 or Math 1010 for students with Elementary Algebra scores greater than 56 and lower than 75.
Math 1010 - Foundations of Math is an introduction to mathematical reasoning including problem-solving strategies, sets and set operations, logic, geometry, probability, statistics and graph theory. Mathematics majors cannot receive credit for this course. GENERAL EDUCATION FOUNDATIONS OR GENERAL EDUCATION DISTRIBUTION PREREQUISITE: MATH 0901 OR PLACEMENT BY THE GENERAL EDUCATION OFFICE.
Math 1016 - Statistics Descriptive and inferential statistics: graphic treatment of data, characteristics of distributions, statistical models, correlation, regression, estimation and hypothesis testing. Computer applications. Prerequisites: Determined by Placement Test Results or MATH*0901, or equivalent.
Math 1017 - Service Learning for Statistics Students will use basic statistical applications to serve the needs of community organizations that require statistical information. Prerequisites: Must be taken in conjunction with MATH 1016.
Math 1030 - Problem Solving Development and application of problem solving strategies to a variety of problems within and outside of mathematics making connections between mathematics and other content areas. Numerous and varied experiences with problem solving as a method of inquiry and applications. PREREQ: MATH 0901 OR PLACEMENT.
Please note that all college level first year algebra and calculus courses, i.e., Math 1000, 1044 and 1054 are delivered by the Math department located in C-233.
GE MATH Lab
The School of General Studies also manages the GE MATH Lab located in CAS 116/117. This lab includes state of the art technology for instructors and students to facilitate the delivery of engaging pedagogy in quantitative literacy. All Math 0901 classes, some SL sessions and placement testing prep workshops for incoming students are located in the GE math lab. The general education program won three different Kean University QFI grants, all designed to improve student academic success in placement testing and entry level math classes.
