TESOL Admission Requirements

Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) M.A.

In addition to the University's admission requirements:

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0*
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement       
  • Professional Resume/CV
  • Departmental interview  may be required
  • Official TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score reports (International Students Only)

* Candidates wishing certification must apply for either the TESOL Alternate Route Program or the TESOL Certification for Professionals prior to application to complete the MA https://www.kean.edu/academics/programs/instruction-and-curriculum-ma/admission-requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0*
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Personal statement
  • Departmental interview may be required
  • Professional Resume/CV
  • Official TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score reports

ESL Alternate Route

In addition to the University’s admissions requirements:

 

  • The completion of a Bachelor of Arts  or Bachelor of Science degree or Master of Arts or  Master of Science degree with an overall  3.0 GPA ( If you graduated prior to  September 2016- the GPA of 2.75 is acceptable)
  • A copy of your CE, Certificate of Eligibility from the Department of Education
  • Submit the ACTFL for TESOL
  • Letter of employment from a school district indicating participation in an Alternate Route program
  • Proof of completion of the 50 hour Pre-Service Workshop. Provide the signed copy of the Verification of Program Completion form.  IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE 50 HOUR PRE-SERVICE WORKSHOP, YOU MAY DO SO BY ENROLLING IN THIS REQUIREMENT AT KEAN UNIVERSITY. CLICK HERE TO ENROLL
  • Official copies of transcripts from all Colleges attended
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency as demonstrated by the score reports from the ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) and the WPT (Writing Proficiency Test).  For more information, visit https://www.actfl.org/.
  • Personal Statement
  • Interview with the Office of Teacher Certification and Alternate Programs before enrolling in classes. An Intake Teacher Readiness Questionnaire will be provided.
  • Official TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score reports
