Communication majors learn to create and deliver messages that inform, persuade and mobilize people in the world around them. Developing effective visual, oral and written communication is the key to professional success.

At Kean, our communication majors learn from established and award-winning journalists, scholars, filmmakers, writers and public relations professionals. Students prepare for the real word by writing and reporting for Kean’s student newspaper, producing content for our radio and TV stations, and creating PR campaigns.

Our close proximity to New York City, a global communication, media and entertainment center, offers students opportunities to land meaningful internships that prepare them for the next step in their careers.

What You Learn

Develop an understanding of today’s communication landscape and acquire the skills needed for a successful career.

  • Sharpen your skills in team and organization building, leadership, listening, public speaking, multicultural communication and conflict resolution

  • Create, produce and edit content for print, television, radio, social media and blogs

  • Learn best practices for communicating through a variety of channels

  • Study theory and media ethics

  • Examine emerging media markets and trends

  • Acquire business acumen and advocacy skills

  • Learn reputation and crisis management techniques used in the public relations sphere

  • Develop meaningful connections in various industries and establish a professional network

You can specialize in one of four major areas of study: communication studies, media/film, journalism and public relations.

You can also complete your degree at Kean Ocean in Toms River.

Communication majors can write for Kean's award-winning student newspaper, The Tower. The Tower has been recognized as one of the top three college newspapers in New Jersey for three consecutive years by the New Jersey Collegiate Press Association.
