Sustainability

Kean’s mission to provide a world-class education requires responsible stewardship of the earth and its resources.  Actions taken today will help ensure a vibrant learning environment for generations to come. As University President Dawood Farahi notes:

“We all have an obligation as good neighbors to make choices that do not harm our planet. As an institution of higher education – especially one with so many students and graduates working with young people in the classroom – we have an even higher calling to demonstrate what is possible.”

Through several campus initiatives, academic offerings and partnerships with public and private agencies and businesses, Kean University pioneered sustainability efforts for a greener campus. The university is home to New Jersey’s first Bachelor of Science program in Sustainability Science. Eco-friendly, nationally recognized buildings such as the New Jersey Center for Science, Technology & Mathematics, make Kean a great place to see green in action.

The University also eliminated all non-biodegradable produce products from its cafeterias and started a farmers’ market featuring locally grown produce. Solar panels help produce energy at Harwood Arena and the Maxine and Jack Lane Center for Academic Success.  Kean’s custom-designed aerobic composter converts all food waste on campus into mulch. The composter converted approximately 1,000 pounds of food scraps per day during the fall 2010 semester.  Each ton of food waste converted into compost results in a one-metric ton reduction in carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.  In the 300 processing days to date, 230,000 pounds (115 tons) have been composted.  The project will be featured in the January 2013 issue of BioCycle.

Annual Academic Year Breakdown:

  • 2009-2010: 28,742 lbs.
  • 2010-2011: 63,801 lbs.
  • 2011-2012: 77,858 lbs.
  • 2012-2013: 58,348 lbs. (thus far)
