Kean Director of Latin American Studies
Earns Fulbright Grant
UNION, N.J. Dr. Nazih Richani, director of Latin American studies and professor in
the Department of Political Science at Kean University, has been awarded a Fulbright Senior Specialists
grant in political science at the University of the Andes in Colombia.
"This grant offers me a great opportunity for completing my research on the causes that led to the failure
of the peace process in Colombia between 1998 and 2002," said Richani, who is studying at the university
for six weeks from mid-July until late August. "It also provides a great opportunity for me to exchange
ideas and experiences with other scholars."
Created to complement the traditional Fulbright Scholar Program, the Fulbright Senior Specialists grant offers
two- to six-week grants to leading U.S. academics and professionals to support curricular and faculty development
and institutional planning at academic institutions in 140 countries around the world.
"The traditional Fulbright Scholar Program offers grants ranging from two months to an academic year, and some
academics and professionals find it difficult to be away overseas for that length of time," said Patti McGill
Peterson, executive director of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, the organization that
manages the Fulbright Scholar Program. "The new Senior Specialists Program offers them another option."
In addition to his research, Richani will also participate in an array of academic activities, such as conducting
teacher training, developing and assessing curricular or educational materials, and leading seminars and workshops.
Furthermore, Richani has also been granted a traditional Fulbright Scholarship for the Academic Year 2005 to conduct
research in El Salvador on the political economy of post-conflict organized violence.
