Kean University to Host Regional/International Programming Contest

UNION, N.J. -- For the third time this decade, Kean University will host the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) regional Collegiate Programming Contest on November 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the CAS building, with the winner(s) going to the world finals competition held in Banff, Canada. The regional contest is sponsored by IBM, Google, AdaCorp, and 2 Sigma – all of whom will have representatives on campus for the event – and pits teams of three university students against eight or more complex, real-world problems, with a grueling five-hour deadline. The contest fosters creativity, teamwork and innovation, building new software programs, and enables students to test their ability to perform under pressure. Quite simply, it is the oldest, largest and most prestigious programming contest in the world – ACM. CAS building from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Battle of the Brains, as it is also known, is a tiered competition that includes local contests, regional contests and the world finals. Nearly 7,000 teams from more than 1,700 universities in 82 countries (all six continents) competed in last years programming contest with 88 teams going to the world finals in Tokyo, Japan, where Warsaw University, Poland, won the world championship.

“The opportunity for Kean University to host this year’s regional competition became available only after a last-minute cancellation by another local university,” said Dr. Stanley Lipson, professor in the Department of ComputerScience. “Kean’s abundant computing facilities, history of hosting the 2000 and 2005 competitions, and quick response by Computer Science faculty quite literally ‘saved the day’ for the regional programming contest.”

Two Kean University teams will participate:
                            Kean IPhil Chen, Montvale, N.J.
                                                       Nicholas Doell, South Plainfield, N.J.
                                                       Adrian Yu, Union, N.J.

Kean II – Frank Kendall, Clark, N.J.
                                                        Guillermo Prescott, Rutherford, N.J.

Braden Ward, Elizabeth, N.J.

Top finishing teams from last year’s regional competition were Rutgers, Cornell, Princeton, Yale, The College of New Jersey and Fairleigh Dickinson with Rutgers taking the top prize. Kean has fielded several teams for this year’s competition. There will be approximately 60 teams competing in this year’s competition. Special thanks to Kean’s student chapter of the ACM and Computer Science faculty for making this event possible.
