Project Adelante is one of the Pre-College Bound Programs at Kean University. It has been in existence since the summer of 1988 when it started its activities with 83 students from the Perth Amboy School District. The Program is designed to reduce the high school dropout rate of Latino students, increase their academic skills, and encourage them to pursue higher education. Project Adelante is an alliance between three school districts (Passaic, Perth Amboy, Plainfield) and Kean University.
Students attend Kean University every day during a four-week summer session and Saturdays during the fall and spring semesters for an academic enrichment program. The project has been extremely successful because it incorporates components that studies have shown to be key in the retention of Hispanic students. These components are parent and family involvement; the use of the language and culture of the students for instruction; a high level of cooperation with the school districts; and the availability of role models.
