Internships in English Studies

Internships 

The School of English Studies routinely offers internships in publishing and journalism, as well as honors courses and opportunities for independent study on an advanced level. 

ENG 4805, 4806 Publishing Field Experience (3, 6)
Supervised placement in a publishing house to learn the rudiments of the publishing trade.
Prerequisites: Open to English Studies Majors who have completed 90 course credits or permission of the Internship Adviser

The English major offers opportunities for internships in publishing, professional writing, and education. Interning is highly encouraged. Please contact the School of English Studies office to arrange to work with the Internship Coordinator. The Internship Coordinator will help you identify an appropriate Internship before the semester begins. The internship must include a well-defined project that furthers a student’s professional and educational goals, while also addressing the needs of the respective institution. 

The Internship in English provides the participant with professional hands-on experience at an institution whose purposes and activities are related to their interests, career and otherwise.  An Internship also helps establish and build upon a network of professional contacts.  The internship should encourage application of ideas, skills, and techniques learned in the classroom.  Just as important, the internship can help to define a participant’s career goals.  Teacher candidates and writers, for example, have found that the internship greatly aids in gaining their first professional position due to the practical experiences gained through work with school groups and publishers, respectively.

Each of the experiences and independent studies have their own prerequisites.

Internship Requirements

  1. Identify an Internship
    Begin by working with an Internship Adviser to identify an appropriate Internship before the semester begins.  The Internship must include a well-defined project that furthers a student’s professional and educational goals, while also addressing the needs of the respective institution. Next, contact and visit the site to identify the proposed project and make work arrangements with a supervisor who will oversee the project. This must be completed and approved before receiving a petition to register for the course. A selection of appropriate sites can be found in the Internship Coordinator’s office.
  2. Submit a Proposal
    Write a 1-2 page proposal that provides a detailed overview of the project and identifies how this particular Internship assists in meeting one’s career / future goals.  This must be completed and approved before receiving a petition to register for the course.
  3. Develop a Contract
    Develop a work contract in consultation with the Supervisor and provide a copy of this contract to the Adviser.  Be specific in identifying the objectives of the Internship, the work responsibilities / activities to be undertaken, the approximate number of hours to be allocated to each activity area, the specific work products to be completed / created, the required dates for completing this work, and a weekly schedule.  Also, record sufficient contact information from the supervisor so that the Internship Coordinator can easily reach the person. This must be completed and approved before receiving a petition to register for the course.
  4. Perform 100 hours of internship for three hours of Internship credit
    Internship hours include time reading, corresponding, and other work related assignments. All hours must be completed by the final class day of the semester.  These hours should be scheduled throughout the semester and recorded in the daily journal.
