50 Hour Courses and Preservice Workshops

Below are the courses that must be taken by all P-3 Alternate Route Candidates.  The tuition for these courses is the same as for any other Kean University graduate course(s).  You have two years to complete your program and must be continuously matriculated.

EC 5000 (3 Cr.)

Foundations of Early Childhood

Students learn how to assess young children’s learning based on research and developmentally appropriate practices that support the whole child, including: social, emotional, cultural and linguistic indicators.  A required 50-hour clinical experience will allow students to plan and deliver instruction that engages children’s learning and provides an assessment of learning outcomes.

Language, Reading, and Thought in the Young Child

Students will be responsible for knowing the entire developmental continuum in language and literacy for young children.

Creating Partnerships with Families

Using an ecological system’s perspective, this course prepares professionals in pre-school, school, and community settings to design and implement partnership programs with diverse family groups.

Developmental Theories for Teaching in Early Childhood

An examination of major child developmental theories as they apply to teaching instruction of language and literacy across all areas of development that supports the whole child.

Integrated Curriculum Development

Students will learn to integrate content specific coursework in a curriculum for young children that is essential to the implementation of literacy skill development.

Designing and Managing Classroom Early Childhood Environments for Differentiated Instruction

Exploring the policies and procedures of designing and managing early childhood settings for differentiated instruction.


EC 5222 (3 Cr.)

Assessment strategies for Learning: Explore and Apply All the Strategies to Promote Learning

Develop a relationship with students, incorporate predictable routines, reinforce (use repetitive techniques), develop social skills, etc.


EC 5500 (3 Cr.)

Integrated Technology Into the Early Childhood Curriculum

Exploration of developmentally appropriate use of technology by young children in early childhood settings.
