NJCSTM Mission and Student Learning Outcomes

NJCSTM Academic Unit Vision and Mission Statements

The mission of NJCSTM is to serve Kean University as a multi-disciplinary scholars program in applied science and mathematics. Through an integrated curriculum, we prepare students to be well-rounded scientist-researchers and scientist-educators.

The vision and goals for 2012-2020 of NJCSTM are for the Center to be a home for our students throughout their careers, moving beyond offering degrees, to providing professional development at all levels. Within the elements of outcomes described below are the fundamentals of the NJCSTM’s plan for achieving our vision by the end of the decade.


NJCSTM Outcomes

Through its academic degree programs, faculty, student research communities, and supporting recruitment, outreach and related resources initiatives, the NJCSTM aims to:

 

  1. Train professionals in applied science and math with both highly developed practical and critical thinking skills and with the potential to further their professional development, and create future teacher-leaders that are sought after by school districts throughout the state.
  2. Recruit students from underrepresented and urban populations and have those students return to and continue to serve their communities.
  3. Create a community of alumni dedicated to the growth of NJCSTM and the success of future students and themselves in advancing scientific and technological innovation.
  4. Maintain a multi-disciplinary faculty in which ideas can be shared and faculty can develop outside of traditional domain areas.

 

BS Science & Technology / Biomedicine Option

The vision of the B.S. Science & Technology / Biomedicine program offered by NJCSTM is to prepare young scientists to pursue post graduate education in the fields of medicine (allopathetic and osteopathic), physical therapy and related fields. The mission of this program is to provide an advanced practical and research project based curriculum through an integrated core curriculum of science and mathematics, including all prerequisite requirements for post graduate medical education programs, as a foundation to advanced coursework in bioscience and biomedicine. NJCSTM has a driving goal for this program to continue to establish collaborations with biomedical, medical/health science and pharmaceutical partners to enhance Kean’s and NJCSTM contributions to the scientific medical research community.


BS Sci & Tech / Biomedicine Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

For the Student Earning a B.S. Degree in the Biomedicine Option, it is our expectation that graduatesfrom the NJCSTM will have these characteristics: 

SLO1 (Biomedical Knowledge): Graduates will possess comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge of the integrated science and mathematical fields, necessary for admission to medical or graduate school should they choose to further their education.

SLO2 (Holistic Knowledge): Graduates will be versatile and resourceful scientists who can adjust to this ever-changing field because of their comprehensive, integrated knowledge of mathematics applied to the physical, biological and chemical sciences.

SLO3 (Critical Thinking): Graduates will be able to combine critical thinking skills and analytical knowledge to design, perform, and analyze scientific or medical research both as an individual and as effective and productive project team members.

SLO4 (Foreign Languages): Graduates will have conversational knowledge of their selected foreign language of study and be able to exercise this language knowledge and demonstrate sociocultural and bioethical awareness.

SLO5 (Communication): Graduates will be able to verbally express themselves and communicate scientific comprehension and knowledge in both formal oral presentations and in written format clearly, concisely and accurately.

SLO6: Graduates will know the origins of modern day bioscience and biomedical theory and application and its importance to society.

B.S. Science & Technology /Engineering Science Program

The vision of the B.S. Science & Technology / Engineering Science program offered by the NJ Center for Science, Technology & Mathematics (NJCSTM) is to prepare students to pursue a career in one of several areas of engineering, including mechanical, electrical, chemical, biomedical, pharmaceutical, transportation, construction, structural and industrial engineering. The mission of this program is to provide a strong foundation for the pursuit of an accelerated master’s degree at The College of Engineering at The NJ Institute of Technology, which is the partner to Kean & NJCSTM. NJCSTM has two initial goals for this new program during its first recruitment period that is Fall 2011. First, to recruit women and minorities in order to increase the availability of undergraduates underrepresented in STEM disciplines to be trained in engineering science and equipped to work with culturally-diverse populations. And second, pursue opportunities for professional engineering experience for students through grant writing and partnership with industry and with other academic institutions.


B.S. Sci & Tech / Engineering Science Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

For the Student Earning a B.S. Degree in the Engineering Science Option, it is our expectation that graduates from the NJCSTM will have these characteristics:

SLO1 (Applied Knowledge): Graduates will possess comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge of engineering science and design principles necessary for admission into graduate study in engineering.

SLO2 (Holistic Knowledge): Graduates will possess the ability to integrate mathematical modeling and computational tools to solve problems in a variety of engineering fields, and know the origins and importance of engineering in society.

SLO3 (Critical Thinking): Graduates will be able to combine critical thinking skills and practical knowledge to design, perform, and analyze engineering problems both as an individual and as effective and productive project team members.

SLO4 (Communication): Graduates will be able to verbally express themselves and communicate scientific comprehension and knowledge both in formal oral presentation and in written format clearly, concisely and accurately.

BS/MS Sci & Tech / Computational Mathematics

The vision of the B.S./M.S. Science & Technology / Computational Mathematics program offered by the NJ Center for Science, Technology & Mathematics (NJCSTM) is to develop a state and nationally recognized center for high performance computing and computational applied mathematics education. The mission of this five year, combined degree program is to train scientist-researchers to advance and support the role of computational infrastructure to solve problems in science, engineering, and design fields. A driving goal of the faculty and students in this program is to advance a research institute forcomputational and applied mathematics with the computational infrastructure to support program, university and regional scientific computing needs.


B.S./M.S. Sci & Tech / Comp Math Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

For the Student Earning a B.S./M.S. Degree in the Computational Mathematics Option, it is our expectation that graduates from the NJCSTM will have these characteristics:

SLO1 (Applied Mathematics Knowledge): Graduates will be strong candidates who may continue their education by pursuing doctoral degrees in related fields of study or otherwise seek career employment in the field of applied mathematics.

SLO2 (Holistic Knowledge): Graduates will be versatile and resourceful scientist-researchers who can adjust to this ever-changing field because of their comprehensive, integrated knowledge of applied mathematics, chemistry/physics and biology.

SLO3 (Critical Thinking): Graduates will be able to combine critical thinking skills and applicable practical knowledge in applied mathematics in the design, performance and analysis of computational work both as an individual and as effective and productive project team members.

SLO4 (Communication): Graduates will be able to verbally express themselves and communicate scientific comprehension and knowledge in both formal oral presentations and in written format clearly, concisely and accurately.

SLO5 (Scientific Programming): Graduates will be proficient in scientific programming, including aspects of software engineering practice including verification and validation as well as application to modern computational architectures.

SLO6 (Modeling): Graduates will be able to apply numerical modeling to problems in the sciences, including choice and implementation of numerical algorithms for iterative continuous and discrete systems.

SLO7 (Optimization): Graduates will be able to optimize problems with multiple variables that depend linearly or non-linearly on many discrete or continuous variables.

SLO8 (Data and Visualization): Graduates will be able to manipulate, mine, and visualize large datasets.

 

BS/MS Sci & Tech / Molecular Biology - Biotechnology Statements

The vision of the B.S./M.S. Science & Technology / Molecular Biology-Biotechnology program offered by the NJ Center for Science, Technology & Mathematics (NJCSTM) is to advance a reputation as a leading program to train scientist-researchers by both the exemplary skills of our students and faculty and the involvement of professionals to partner with NJCSTM. The mission of this five year, combined degree program is to train students to take their place in a multi-disciplinary science workforce that requires a broad base of fundamental knowledge, concentrated knowledge within one’s discipline, and theability to make connections between disciplines. A driving goal of this program is to train professionals in biotechnology with both highly developed practical laboratory skills and critical thinking skills and with the potential to further their professional development as scientific technologies advance.


BS/MS Sci & Tech / MolBio-Biotech Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

For the Student Earning a B.S./M.S. Degree in the Molecular Biology - Biotech Option, it is our expectation that graduates from the NJCSTM will have these characteristics: 

SLO1 (Applied Knowledge): Graduates will be strong candidates who may continue their education by pursuing doctoral degrees in related fields of study or otherwise seek career employment in the sciences.

SLO2 (Holistic Knowledge): Graduates will be versatile and resourceful scientist-researchers who can adjust to this ever-changing field because of their comprehensive, integrated knowledge of applied mathematics, chemistry/physics and biology, and of the origins of biotechnology in biology and chemistry as well as in society.

SLO3 (Critical Thinking): Graduates will be able to combine critical thinking skills, analytical knowledge and practical laboratory skills to design, perform, and analyze scientific problems both as an individual and as effective and productive project team members.

SLO4 (Ethics): Graduates will have adequate knowledge of the bioethical standards of the science profession and be able to exercise ethical awareness.

SLO5 (Communication): Graduates will be able to verbally express themselves and communicate scientific comprehension and knowledge in both formal oral presentations and in written format clearly, concisely and accurately.

BS/MA Sci & Tech / Instruction & Curriculum Program

The vision is to advance a reputation as a leading program to train scientist-educators by the exemplary and innovative skills of our students and faculty. The mission of the BS/MA five year combined degree program is to train secondary education teachers of biology, chemistry and mathematics who are leaders in education, who have a solid foundation in their content area, and are simultaneously well-versed in innovative pedagogical practices that are rooted in educational theories regarding student learning.


BS/MA Sci & Tech / Instrctn & Curriclm, Sci &Tech Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

For Students Earning a B.S./M.A. Degree in Science & Technology / Instr & Curriculum, it is our expectation that graduates from this NJCSTM program will have these characteristics:

SLO1 (Critical Thinking): Graduates will be professionals in math education or science education with both highly developed practical and critical thinking skills with the potential to further their professional development.

SLO2 (Content Knowledge & Leadership): Graduates will comprehend their role in society and in math/science as well as the role of scientist-researchers who are their counterparts.

SLO3 (Pedagogical Knowledge): Graduates will be future teacher-leaders that are sought after by school districts.

SLO4 (Communication): Graduates will articulate that all learners are unique, and that different methods of pedagogy must be employed in their classrooms to enable all learners to learn.

SLO5 (Standards): Graduates will be able to verbally express themselves and communicate scientific comprehension and knowledge in both formal oral presentations and in written format clearly, concisely and accurately.

 

MS Biotechnology Science Program

The vision of the M.S. Biotechnology Science program offered by the NJ Center for Science, Technology & Mathematics (NJCSTM) is to advance the knowledge and skills of students already holding a science bachelor’s degree via a master’s program of science that is current in its content and attractive in its flexibility and design. The mission of this program is to prepare students for employment in the expanding field of biotechnology through course work and laboratory experiences. NJCSTM has three driving goals for this program. First, to train professionals in biotechnology with both highly developedpractical laboratory skills and with the potential to further their professional development as scientific technologies advance. Second, to graduate versatile resourceful scientists with the critical ability to adjust to their ever-changing field of employment. And third, to prepare strong candidates for graduation who may wish to continue their education by pursuing their doctorate in a related field of study or otherwise seek career employment in the scientific industry.


MS Biotechnology Science Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

For the Student Earning a M.S. Degree in Biotechnology Science, it is our expectation that graduates from the NJCSTM will have these characteristics:

SLO1 (Applied Knowledge): Graduates will possess adequate analytical laboratory and research skills, demonstrate instrumentation operation and applicable software knowledge currently used in biotechnology and related disciplines (genetic engineering, analytical chemistry, bioinformatics, molecular & cellular biology) to enter the biotech or pharmaceutical industry.

SLO2 (Holistic Knowledge): Graduates will be able to combine critical thinking skills and analytical knowledge to design, perform, and analyze scientific problems in the laboratory both as an individual and as effective and productive project team members, and know the origins of biotechnology and its importance in society.

SLO3 (Ethics): Graduates will have adequate knowledge of the bioethical standards of the science profession and be able to exercise ethical awareness.

SLO4 (Communication): Graduates will be able to verbally express themselves and communicate scientific comprehension and knowledge in both formal oral presentations and in written format clearly, concisely and accurately.

Student Learning Outcomes – Knowledge: Students will demonstrate proficiency in knowledge and content by:
